Hearing Laughter. Seeing Smiles. Michigan provides hearing and vision screening FREE of charge to all children in collaboration with local departments of health and school districts. If your child is in school, the screenings begin in kindergarten. If your child is not enrolled in a formal school setting, they can receive the screening at your local health department.
Michigan Hands & Voices is a chapter of the nationwide non-profit organization dedicated to supporting families of children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, as well as the professionals who serve them.
Michigan Family Voices is a grassroots collaborative that exists to identify and mobilize current and new family member and individual leaders to create a network of individuals with special health care needs and their families across the state that will impact and effect positive change in policy. The Michigan Early Hearing Detection & Intervention (EHDI) Program’s goal is to provide for better outcomes for Michigan newborns and young children with hearing loss and their families through early screening, appropriate diagnosis and intervention, monitoring, personnel development, and increasing public awareness.
Dyslexia is an invisible problem with language that is present at birth and continues throughout life for those with it. Without recognition and appropriate instruction, children with dyslexia will struggle with, or fail to read and write; this is in spite of their average or in many cases, above average intelligence. MDI has been successfully teaching children with dyslexia for over 33 years. Providing remedial and preventative instruction, we have helped thousands of children with dyslexia. This state office concentrates on helping to improve the lives of Michigan’s Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing citizens. Our mission is affirming the indisputable right of persons who are Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing to secure effective communication. It receives input from its 13-member citizens Advisory Council appointed by the Governor. Services include Technical Support, Information and Referral, Accommodations, Interpreter Information and Services.

The fundamental goal of the DD Council is to ensure that people with developmental disabilities have the opportunities and support to achieve their full potential and life dreams. The Council consists of 21 Michigan residents appointed by the Governor. The Council provides funding and leadership to the statewide Regional Inclusive Community Coalitions (RICCs) which promote advocacy, capacity building, and systemic change.
The Birth Defects Follow-up Program at the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services helps families find support and services. The program provides information for families and health care providers about birth defects and rare disorders.
